Draft Minutes

ALA Annual 2003, Toronto

June 21, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Attending:

Members: Laura Dale Bischof, recorder (U of Minnesota), Sam Dunlap (UC San Diego), Jeff Garrett (Northwestern U), Dick Hacken (Brigham Young U), Tom Kilton (U of Illinois), Guests: Helga Rom (U of Michigan), Michael Seadle (Michigan State)

1. Approval of Previous Minutes

Approval of minutes was postponed. Jim will distribute them via email for approval before posting on the CDWG web page.

2. Agenda Approved

3. Report from the GRP Steering Committee

Tom Kilton reported on the proposed membership fees that would support staff to work on accounting, license agreements, and a newsletter etc. This will be discussed at the GRP meeting in Munich. There was also a discussion about how the Center for Research Libraries might become involved in the GRP.

4. Xipolis

Dick Hacken gave an update on Xipolis. A number of Duden titles, such as Duden Familiennamen, have been added to Xipolis, but the Spektrum titles will drop out. Xipolis is considering the North American market as well as the European market when adding new titles. The declining value of the dollar effects the number of searches each level of subscription buys. Dick Hacken will update the Xipolis web site to reflect this situation. Jeff Garrett asked if any libraries have been adding records for the individual titles. He will look into cataloging individual titles at Northwestern.

5. PCI and DigiZeitschriften (DZ)

Jim Niessen and Sam Dunlap have been researching the full-text holdings of DZ in relation to the potential full-text German titles to be offered by ProQuest on PCI. Jim and Sam recommend that PCI not add full-text for the 58 DZ titles, but that they add indexing for the 32 DZ titles not currently covered by PCI. From the list of 369 German journals on PCI supplied by ProQuest (this includes multilingual journals), Sam and Jim created a list of 30 that should be top candidates for full-text in PCI.    We also need to keep in mind that JSTOR has been adding some German titles in the humanitites.

6. Opfermann Collection

The National Library of New Zealand is offering the Opfermann Collection, which it had acquired earlier, but now does not have the resources to store, organize, and catalog. It is an eclectic collection of books, pamphlets, transcripts, and other ephemera that deal with Germany. Sam Dunlap will use a sampling technique to determine to what extent the content is held in North American libraries. Jim Niessen will make further inquiries about this collection, i.e. is there a title list and can the collection be broken up? This is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that offers of such collections come to the German Resources Project. We need to work out procedures for such cases, and the degree to which we wish to strictly limit our role, if any, in finding a new home for such collections. For example, the GRP could disseminate summary information about collections. We also discussed whether the GRP CDWG web site could serve as a forum for German/North American book exchanges, e.g. in the transfer of materials to emerging libraries in the former East. This is could be a project for the contact partners.

7. GRP CDWG Meeting in Munich

The draft agenda for the Munich meeting is very full. 75 minutes will be devoted to Collection Development, and DZ will be a topic of discussion. In addition to discussing how North Americans can get affordable access to DZ, it would be good if GRP had something to offer German libraries, such as help with access to JSTOR.
